CHARACTER INFORMATION
Name: Rika Kawai
Canon: Wonder Egg Priority
Canon point: Episode 10
Age: 15
History: Wiki page.

Personality: ( tw for mentions of self-harm. )

Blunt, shallow, mean - at first glance, Rika doesn't appear to be a particularly likeable character, her introduction into the series establishing her as a lecherous, greedy girl who only cares about looks and money. She seems to have no qualms using people for her own needs, talks nasty stuff about her dead friend, and admits that the only thing she cares about when looking for friends is their looks. She's extremely crude, falsely flirtatious, arrogant and judgemental. Of course, most of that is later proved to be wrong - because while she is definitely blunt, willing to touch upon uncomfortable topics others avoid, the cruelty in her words and her brash, uncaring behavior all make for a mask she hides her real self under. It's much easier to be a peppy mean girl than to expose what lays beneath - she dislikes talking about her problems, actively ignoring questions about her scars, hoping that not thinking about her current situation will somehow make it disappear.

Beneath the layers of a persona she'd established to fend people off, there's a sad, self-despising girl who struggles with feelings of guilt. As the other girls come to learn more about Rika, they call her a 'contrarian' - someone who says one thing but means another. Initially, Rika calls her dead friend fat, sweaty and ugly, provoking some negative feelings in Ai, another girl thrown into the egg world. Later, she explains Chiemi would come to her handshake events, back when she'd debuted as an underground junior idol - and that she'd line up for her over and over, spending large amounts of money for gifts. Rika says she'd thought she had a rich patron, but as it turns out, Chiemi was shoplifting in order to be able to afford pleasing her - and it's not something Rika wanted. In order to make her stop, Rika decides to tell her something cruel: that she's never going to be friends with a fan, and that she'd hate being seen with a fatty like her, hoping her words cut deep enough to make Chiemi rethink and leave Rika, as well as stealing, behind. Unfortunately, her mean jabs end up affecting the girl more than she'd expected, and after struggling with ED, she takes her own life, leaving Rika feeling guilty and responsible for her death.

Rika's home situation leaves a lot to be desired, too - her mom owns a bar that she often gets drunk at, and Rika's left to her own devices, having an absent dad and a less-than-stellar mother figure. Desperately, she wants to find her father, fully believing that they'd hit it off - and that her mother is keeping her away from him solely because she doesn't want Rika to be happy. Her father's words, and something that's been ingrained deep into her personality, are "A pretty girl doesn't need to carry a wallet; someone else will always pay for her." She seems to take that to heart, often seen asking others for money, calling people 'wallets', all while promising she'll pay them back - which she never does. Her struggle with mental health and self-harm seems to stem from her home situation, as well as the guilt that's built up over Chiemi's death; she claims that even if cutting makes her weak, that's just who she is, and she's going to live despite that.

Despite her initial introduction as someone unpleasant, she seems to bloom when she's around people she likes. We see a different side of her, once all the girls become friends - energetic, excitable, a little provocative; out of all the girls, she seems the fondest of talking about boys and possible romances, admitting that her 'future dream' is going overseas and marrying a hot foreigner. Once she can let her guard down, and allows herself to let people in, we see how easily she attaches to others, and how fiercely she cares about them. It's quite obvious she loves the other girls a lot, worrying for their well-being during their fights in the dream world; at some point, she even suggests abandoning their missions altogether, claiming that someone has to be the bad guy and point out they shouldn't risk their lives in order to bring people back.

In episode 7, we see a glimpse of what Rika really is: a girl desperate to be loved, cared for and saved, willing to follow any authoritative figure, wanting to get rid of all her negative feelings. The lack of a guiding figure in her life, and no role model to follow after is something she's struggling with constantly, at a loss once someone who can take control appears - she's shown to be easily swayed by other people's convictions, and the idea of letting go and allowing someone else to take the reins seems appealing at the time. She almost dies that day - but it's a necessary experience for her to realize that despite everything, she wants to keep on living as herself, even if it hurts.

Powers/abilities:

In real life, she's a normal girl - though due to her idol debut, we can assume she's at least pretty skilled at singing and dancing. In the dream world, where the girls have been given powers in order to defeat monsters, she dual wields two swords that resemble box cutters, presumably referencing her tendency to self-harm. While the heightened strength and agility only apply to the girls in the dream world, it's been called similar to "high altitude training" - meaning their bodies get stronger while they fight, though not by any supernatural amount.

Questions:
✽ What does your character consider to be their top three strengths?

She doesn't actually think of herself as a person with any particular strengths. If you were to ask her, she'd say her looks - she's super cute, after all, right? In reality, her determination and decisiveness are one of her strongest qualities, nothing able to stand in her way once she's decided on her goal.

✽ What do others consider to be your character's greatest weakness?

Others would probably say it's her bad attitude, and her lack of ability to be straightforward about her feelings. She's more likely to hurt other people than to be upfront about how she feels and what she wants - which is what's gotten her in the situation with Chiemi in the first place.

✽ What are your character's three greatest fears?

Losing people precious to her is a big one. She shows great concern for the other Wonder Egg girls' lives, trying to convince them to stop fighting so they don't risk their lives. Being vulnerable and known seems to be a big issue for her, too; she tends to hide her real feelings behind mean words and actions, all to avoid showing other people weakness. Having no autonomy over herself and what happens to her - she wants independence from her mother rather desperately, claiming she doesn't want her to be happy, and there's fear of being stuck and unable to get out.

✽ What would your character choose for a last meal?

Probably a cup of bubble tea, or whatever was trendy at the time. Yeah, she wouldn't overthink that one at all.

✽ Has your character ever killed? If so, how did that affect them? If not, how would it affect them?

She's killed monsters before - creatures in the dream world that'd attack the girls she was protecting. However, even despite the fact that some of them spoke and resembled humans, she'd never kill in real life, despite having suicidal thoughts before. Other people's lives are precious, though - she gets upset when Neiru says she needs to cut a girl in a coma's life support. Depending on the situation, it'd probably affect her differently - either way, it'd be extremely negative, and I doubt she'd ever forgive herself for it.

✽ If your character was given one selfish wish (eg. must be applied to themselves and not affect others), what would it be?

To learn who her father is, and to possibly meet him.
